Never give in has been an integral part of my life since I graduated from Sanawar. Every time I got a rejection in the film industry, being an outsider - the last push on the Tilley’s hill kept me going for a better day ahead. Sanawar taught me how to respect people, work closely with them and most of all - you need to trust and believe in people to get to where you want to go - it’s all about team work - fight the good fight and never give in….

I was at The Lawrence School, Sanawar for eight years. One of the most important lessons I learnt during my schooldays was that whenever you fall, you get up and try again. I also learnt that you do not compete with others; you compete with yourself. And when you do that, you continuously improve and become better in whichever profession you choose. The profession I chose was that of a warrior, and a warrior's journey never truly ends. It goes on and on... In the end, what matters is the journey you have travelled, not the destination.

Sanawar has been one of the greatest influences in my life. It was here that I learnt resilience, discipline, teamwork and the enduring “Never Give In” spirit that has been my guiding light throughout my life’s journey. These values gave me the strength to overcome adversity while climbing Mt Everest from the harder north side in Tibet and reaching the summit of the highest peaks on all seven continents, completing the Polar Trilogy by skiing to the North Pole, South Pole and across the Greenland icecap, rafting and kayaking some of the world’s most challenging rivers, competing in the National Games and international rafting championships and ultimately accomplishing the Explorer’s Grand Slam. I remain deeply grateful to my alma mater and proud to be part of the Sanawarian fraternity.

Sanawar imbued me with invaluable lessons of life and learning. Sanawar is more than 175 years old, rich with traditions, young with thousands of alumni across the world, united by its history, its ethics and discipline, and its inclusive education. To belong to Sanawar is to belong to one big family which believes on one motto: Never Give In. Truthfully, I still live in that motto’s power, No matter what your age or where you are from, you bond like a family, simply because you are from Sanawar, the best school of all.

Sending me to Sanawar was the best present my parents gave me without realizing it. It taught me to be independent, resilient, how to deal with bullies, and to be a team player. I developed friendships with boys and girls in my class that have grown tremendously over time. I never really thought that much about the motto, but it must have had a visceral impact because I’m an eternal optimist and never give up on anything as long as there’s a sliver of an opening to continue. I enjoy meeting Sanawarians all over the world regardless of what we have in common. The shared experience on the hilltop is special – the sounds of the trees, the monkeys, the crows, the air, and always being hungry.

I did the four of my final years of schooling at The Lawrence School, Sanawar before joining the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. Sanawar prepared me well for three gruelling years of training at NDA as well as for a challenging career thereafter in the Indian Navy, serving on submarines. Sanawar taught me to be a team player, as comfortable leading as being led. It taught me to be curious, questioning everything I did not understand, and not feeling shy to do so. It taught me to me empathetic towards people, animals as well as the environment. Most of all, it taught me perseverance in keeping with its undying motto of ‘Never Give In’.
