Sending me to Sanawar was the best present my parents gave me without realizing it. It taught me to be independent, resilient, how to deal with bullies, and to be a team player. I developed friendships with boys and girls in my class that have grown tremendously over time. I never really thought that much about the motto, but it must have had a visceral impact because I’m an eternal optimist and never give up on anything as long as there’s a sliver of an opening to continue. I enjoy meeting Sanawarians all over the world regardless of what we have in common. The shared experience on the hilltop is special – the sounds of the trees, the monkeys, the crows, the air, and always being hungry.

I did the four of my final years of schooling at The Lawrence School, Sanawar before joining the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. Sanawar prepared me well for three gruelling years of training at NDA as well as for a challenging career thereafter in the Indian Navy, serving on submarines. Sanawar taught me to be a team player, as comfortable leading as being led. It taught me to be curious, questioning everything I did not understand, and not feeling shy to do so. It taught me to me empathetic towards people, animals as well as the environment. Most of all, it taught me perseverance in keeping with its undying motto of ‘Never Give In’.

I have a deep and lasting affection for my school days at Sanawar. They were undoubtedly the most formative years of my life, and I am quite sure that my modestly successful career as a soldier was due entirely to everything I learned on that hilltop in the Shivaliks. I was among the fortunate few who had the distinction of being the King’s Colour Bearer at the Trooping of the Colour parade on 4th October 1947, the first parade at Sanawar after Independence of India and Inspected by the Governor General Lord Mountbatten.

Looking back to 1983, when I joined Sanawar, little did I know the education, the experiences, the values, and the friendships I developed there would form so much of who I am today. Sanawar shaped me and provided the base that served so well for the countless experiences on and off campus- lessons that have chartered a course through my personal and professional life. Teachers believed in us before we believed in ourselves, and for the friendships we formed, I shall forever be grateful and proud to call myself a Sanawarian. No matter where life has taken me, a part of me has always remained on those hills.

Sanawar made me a confident person and gave me the wings to fly. It nurtured not only academic excellence but also curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love for diverse pursuits. I believe my passion for art found its earliest roots there. More than sixty years after graduating, my memories of Sanawar remain vivid. Its enduring influence continues to shape my outlook, values, and every journey I have undertaken since.

The seven formative years I spent in Sanawar (1956-62) were seminal in shaping my persona and moulding my psyche by instilling values that have sustained me throughout the eighty years of my life. Our school motto, ‘Never Give In’, time and again helped me overcome the numerous heartbreaks aspiring writers confront in the early stage of their career, and gave me the strength to persevere till success finally came into sight. I recall that I was inspired by the absolute seriousness with which every member of the Sanawarian community, from the headmaster, teachers, to the support staff, approached their mandated duties, their attributes such as punctuality and precision, and have endeavoured to emulate these. Above all, it was in Sanawar that I became familiar with the core tool of my trade, the English language, and first sensed the ‘power of words’!
